The Faith Community Pharmacy is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization created to provide free prescription medication to residents of Diocese of Covington who have no prescription insurance or the financial means to cover the expensive costs of medicines. Most prescription medications are donated by area physicians and drug manufactures. There are some medications that must be purchased, such as insulin and generic medications, due to refrigeration needs or the expense thereof.

The Kentucky State Board of Pharmacy approved the creation of the first charitable pharmacy to serve the poor in the Northern Kentucky area, but made the stipulation that no money could be exchanged for prescriptions dispensed from the Faith Community Pharmacy. Therefore, the pharmacy must strictly rely on private and business donations, foundation grants, and fundraisers.

Costs are kept to a minimum by using volunteers, both individuals and those referred from various organizations, and students from the University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy. The pharmacy has 50 active volunteers who sort, inventory, fill, and dispense prescriptions to approved clients. These volunteers also assist with answering the phones and other clerical work as needed. The University of Cincinnati's College of Pharmacy has approved the Faith Community Pharmacy as an experiential site, which gives UC Pharmacy students an opportunity during externship to gain professional experience.

History

The St. Vincent de Paul Community Pharmacy dba Faith Community Pharmacy has been in operation since March 2002. The two co-founders, both retail pharmacists, recognized the need in the community for a charitable pharmacy. They worked with the Kentucky state board of Pharmacy to change the law, allowing the dispensing of samples of drugs ,donated for our use by local physician's offices and pharmaceutical companies. The first ever non-profit small business “Success” award was presented to the Pharmacy in 2006 by the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. In July 2007, we received the Community Services Collaboration of the Year Award from the Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission.
